Backyard Cleanout: A Connecticut Homeowner’s Guide to Reclaiming Your Yard

The question that hits a lot of homeowners every year: when’s the last time you actually used your backyard?

If you’re like the homeowners we work with across Hartford, New Haven, Middlesex, and Litchfield counties, the answer is “I keep meaning to fix it.” There’s a fence section the storm took down a couple winters back. A patio set that was already faded when you bought the house. A swing set the kids outgrew years ago, slowly being claimed by vines. Maybe an above-ground pool that hasn’t held water in seasons.

Every year, the same plan: this is the year we get the yard back. Then summer goes by, life happens, and the pile of yard projects rolls into next April.

This guide is for the homeowners who are done with that cycle. We’re going to walk through exactly what a backyard cleanout looks like — what we typically haul, how long it takes, what it costs in Connecticut, and the difference between calling a junk removal crew and trying to do it yourself. By the end you’ll know whether your yard is a one-call job or a one-weekend project.

What “Backyard Cleanout” Actually Means

When people call us for a backyard cleanout, we’re rarely just hauling one thing. It’s almost always a combination — the patio set and the grill and the fence the dog chewed through and the trampoline that’s been a lawn tarp for years.

A typical backyard cleanout includes some mix of:

  • Old or broken outdoor furniture (patio sets, umbrellas, lounge chairs, fire pits)
  • Outdoor structures (swing sets, trampolines, sheds, gazebos, pergolas, dog kennels)
  • Pools and pool equipment (above-ground frames, liners, pumps, ladders)
  • Fencing (wood, vinyl, chain-link, or sections taken down by storms)
  • Decks, railings, and lattice work
  • Yard debris (brush piles, fallen branches, old mulch and stone)
  • Outdoor appliances (grills, smokers, propane tanks, pizza ovens)
  • Random “I’ll deal with that later” items — old paint cans, busted hoses, pots and planters, lawn ornaments, kids’ bikes that rusted in place

The whole point of hiring a crew is that we don’t make you sort it into separate piles. Wood, metal, plastic, brush — point at it, and we load it. We sort the recyclables and donations on our end so you don’t have to think about it.

The 7 Things We Haul Out of Connecticut Backyards

After years of backyard cleanouts across Connecticut, these are the items that show up on almost every job:

1. Old patio furniture. Aluminum frames bent from snow load, cushions that’ve grown a science experiment, glass tabletops that didn’t survive the last windstorm. A full patio set goes in the truck in about ten minutes.

2. Trampolines and swing sets. These are deceptively heavy and fully tangled with the lawn after a few years. We disassemble, haul, and recycle the metal frames. If yours has been in place for years and never moved, expect about an hour of work.

3. Above-ground pools. Common when the maintenance bill starts to outpace the use the family actually gets out of the pool. We can dismantle the frame, drain and remove the liner, and haul everything in one visit. (For a real cost estimate, our pool removal cost calculator breaks it down by pool size and material.)

4. Old fences. Sections that came down in storms, rotting wood pickets, chain-link a previous owner installed decades ago. We pull the posts (footings included if you want them out), break down the panels, and haul the load.

5. Sheds. Small storage sheds, kids’ playhouses, and old wooden outbuildings that are more wood rot than wood. (See our shed removal guide for Hartford County for what shed demolition typically involves.)

6. Grills, smokers, and propane tanks. Rusted-out Webers, the smoker that got used twice, half-empty propane tanks. We dispose of tanks at certified facilities and recycle the metal.

7. Brush piles and yard debris. Branches you’ve been meaning to chip, the pile of mulch you over-ordered three years ago, old landscape stones, broken planters. Yard debris is heavier than people expect — but it loads fast.

The pattern: most of what’s in your backyard is on this list. A junk removal crew is the fastest way to clear all seven categories in one visit.

The 2-Day Backyard Reset Timeline

For a typical Connecticut backyard with several of the items above, here’s what a real cleanout looks like:

Day 1: Demolition and dismantling (3–5 hours).
We arrive with a 2- or 3-person crew, walk the yard with you, and confirm the scope and price before we touch anything. Then we get to work — taking apart the swing set, breaking down the fence, draining and dismantling the pool, separating brush. Most of Day 1 is loud-but-fast manual work. By the end of the afternoon your yard looks dramatically different even before the truck leaves.

Day 2: Hauling, sorting, and final sweep (2–4 hours).
For larger jobs we come back with a fresh truck, load the remaining material, and do a final cleanup pass — raking the grass back into shape where the swing set sat, picking up small debris, sweeping any patio surfaces. By the time we leave, the yard is genuinely usable again, not just “less full of stuff.”

For smaller backyards (one or two of the seven categories above), the whole job is a single half-day visit. We don’t bill differently — you only pay for the space your items take up in the truck. Our junk volume estimator gives you a real-time price range based on what you’ve got.

DIY vs. Hire: When to Pick Up the Phone

Plenty of backyard projects are weekend warrior territory — clearing leaves, pruning, hauling a bag of trash to the dump. Those don’t need us.

Where it makes sense to call in a crew:

You’d need to rent a dumpster, and the dumpster math doesn’t work. A 10-yard dumpster rental runs $400–$600 in CT, plus you pay for the days, plus you do all the lifting yourself, plus you can’t put certain items in it (propane tanks, tires, treated wood in some towns). For most backyard cleanouts our flat rate is comparable or cheaper than a dumpster — and we do the labor.

You’d need to make multiple trips to the transfer station. If you’d be loading and unloading a pickup truck four times to clear your yard, that’s a full weekend of your time. Multiply your hourly worth and you’ll usually find the math favors hiring.

You’re physically not in a position to do it. Backs go out. Knees give up. We’ve worked with plenty of customers who absolutely could have done the labor themselves a decade ago, and now reasonably can’t. Hiring a crew isn’t a luxury in that case — it’s how the job actually gets done.

You don’t have a way to dispose of certain items. Propane tanks, pressure-treated lumber, fiberglass pool material, old shingles, electronics — every CT town has different rules about what they will and won’t take. We know all four counties, and we sort and route everything correctly.

You want it done in days, not seasons. Be honest about whether “I’ll do it next weekend” is going to actually happen.

What Does a Backyard Cleanout Cost in Connecticut?

Backyard cleanouts in CT range from our $150 minimum (a small load — say, a single patio set and a few bags of brush) up to $1,500–$2,500 for a full-yard reset with multiple structures.

The pricing is volume-based, not item-based. You’re paying for the space your stuff takes in the truck — not for individual pieces. That means a yard with one giant pile of light brush and a yard with three pieces of heavy furniture might cost about the same.

Rough ballpark by job size:

  • Quick clear (one structure or one furniture set, light debris): $150–$300
  • Half-day reset (multiple items, one major structure): $300–$650
  • Full-day backyard overhaul (pool, fence, swing set, patio, brush): $800–$1,500
  • Big-property estate-style cleanout (everything, plus shed and outbuildings): $1,500–$2,500+

For a real-time estimate, plug your specific items into our junk removal cost calculator. It shows you the truck filling up as you add items and gives a price range you can plan around. If you’ve got a pool involved, the pool removal calculator handles that side of the job.

Whatever the calculator says, the on-site quote is what we honor. No hidden fees, no after-the-fact upcharges.

What Your Town’s Trash Service Won’t Take

Here’s the catch most homeowners hit: your municipal pickup will take some of your backyard junk, but rarely the items you actually need to get rid of.

Most Connecticut towns pick up household trash and accept some yard waste during defined seasons (typically April through November), and many have annual or bi-annual bulky waste days. But across Hartford, New Haven, Middlesex, and Litchfield counties, the items below are almost universally not part of municipal pickup:

  • Fence panels and posts (especially with concrete footings)
  • Trampoline frames and swing sets
  • Above-ground pool material
  • Construction-grade wood (decks, railings, lattice)
  • Pressure-treated lumber
  • Propane tanks (any size)
  • Tires
  • Concrete, brick, or masonry from old patios
  • Pool chemicals or partial paint cans
  • Anything over a certain weight or length per item

If your cleanout has any of those, you’re looking at a transfer station run or a junk removal call. (We see all of the above on a regular basis — none of it is unusual.)

For specific town rules, check the service area page — we’ve worked in nearly every town across all four counties and know which transfer stations accept what.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a backyard cleanout take?

Most jobs are done in a single half-day or full-day visit. Larger properties with multiple structures (pools, sheds, swing sets) sometimes split across two days. We confirm the timeline at your free on-site quote.

Do I have to be home for the cleanout?

No. Once we’ve walked the property with you, given a quote, and you’ve approved it, we can do the work while you’re at work. Lots of customers prefer it that way.

What do you do with everything you haul?

We sort and recycle wherever possible — metal goes to a scrap recycler, working items go to local donation partners, brush and clean wood go to a chipping facility. Landfill is our last resort, not our first.

Do you handle pool removal as part of a backyard cleanout?

Yes. We can include pool removal in a backyard cleanout job — for above-ground pools it’s straightforward; inground pools are a separate, larger project (see our pool removal cost calculator for that side of the job).

What about hot tubs, sheds, and trailers?

All in our wheelhouse. Trailers, sheds, and hot tubs each have their own logistics — see our guides on trailer removal in Connecticut and shed removal in Hartford County for the specifics, or just call and we’ll bundle everything into one visit.

Is your quote guaranteed?

Yes. The price we give you on-site is the price you pay. We never quote one number and bill another — that’s the whole point of being locally owned instead of a franchise call center.

How quickly can you come out?

We offer same-day or next-day service when our schedule allows. During spring and early summer the calendar fills up fast, so book early.
